Tuition for pupils with learning difficulties and disabilities (LDD)
Standard day time tutoring services for `not at school` pupils, excluded pupils, new arrivals to the Reading area and pupils with learning difficulties and disabilities (LDD), encompassing a broad spectrum of different needs which affect a child’s learning style. These needs can be broken down into the following three specific areas:
i) Social, emotional and behavioural disorders – such as Aspergers Syndrome
and autism
ii) Sensory Impairments – such as hearing and visual impairments
iii) Learning Difficulties – such as dyslexia and Downs Syndrome
The SPAAK Learning Centre provides education for pupils aged between 5 and 19 during normal school hours (term time) who are:-
a) struggling in mainstream education
b) new to the Reading area
c) out of mainstream education, for whatever reason.
In addition, we offer support outside school term times, at weekends and during school holidays. An example of this service is our Homework Club, which is run after school in small groups, complementing school work. Tutors keep a Learning Record Sheet for each pupil, which keeps track of achievement and helps to motivate pupils to progress.
By providing one-to-one tuition in a calm, quiet environment, children of all ages are helped to catch up in core subjects and prepare for selection tests into grammar school.
The SPARK Education Centre supports pupils across the Key Stages by offering core curriculum tuition to pupils who have been excluded from school or are at risk of being excluded, pupils with specific learning needs, SEBD, looked after Children and pupils with reduced timetables, who might have social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, helping them to reintegrate successfully into mainstream education. Our pupils are helped to achieve their potential in key stage examinations, and we have up-to-date and innovative computer software to assist students in this process, including support with GCSEs on a one-to-one basis.
Our staff are able to take on curriculum responsibilities from KS2 to GCSE. We offer a very flexible service with resourceful staff, who have a sense of humour, current knowledge of educational issues and experience of students with SEBD. They are all good classroom practitioners and are committed to supporting students to return to mainstream education or to prepare pupils for various examinations including ALL GCSE subjects.
We have an ever increasing pool of both primary and secondary school teachers working with children and young people in the care of Local Authorities. Our tutors have experience of working with a child or young person in their care home, school or at our Centre on a one-to-one basis.
