Welcome to SPARK Educare Learning Centre. We are a 1:1 tutoring facility based Reading focusing on helping children with their education needs.

SPARK has two basic functions, during school hours we work with children struggling with mainstream education - particularly focusing on excluded pupils, those Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEETs) and Looked After Children who have fallen behind in literacy and numeracy. Then in the evenings, weekends and holidays we work with pupils aged from 5-18 with homework support, exam preparation, one to one tutoring and general fun activities like Art, Dance, Drama, cooking, etc.

The work we do with our paying pupils and fund raising events help us provide for the excluded, NEETs students and the community.

How we support children
Many of the problems students have with learning and progressing are caused by poor understanding of some of the basic ideas and techniques. Sometimes too little time was spent on early learning – the alphabet, number tables, spellings, handwriting, etc or work was missed due to unforeseen absences.  So occasionally gaps can appear in the things that children have learnt. These gaps prevent them from progressing. It's our role to identify these gaps, fix them and get the child back on the right track. Children new to the UK education system need a gradual introduction to the national curriculum. We have experience and award winning resources for this vital transition support.

Every session of tutoring starts with a short mental arithmetic test which helps us to identify the gaps, boosting self-confidence as well as improving mental arithmetic expertise.  After each level is completed, pupils can progress to the next level, which will include new skills, techniques and more challenges.

For the Gifted and Talented we run high quality 11+ examination preparation course in small groups on Saturdays for 8 to 10 year olds. GCSE revision and practice exam sessions are organised through out the year.

Children new to the UK education system need a gradual introduction to the national curriculum. We have experience and award winning resources for this vital transition support.

We are based in Reading, open 52 weeks of the year, Monday to Saturday, from 8.00 an to 7.00pm (closed bank holidays)

Requirements for the voluntary part of the Childcare Register

Introduction

This information leaflet describes the requirements set out in regulations for the voluntary part of the Childcare Register. As you havw chosen to be included on this register you most meet these requirements at all times when providing childcare.

The requirements cover the following:

• Welfare of the children being cared for - protection of children
• Arrangements for safeguarding the children
• Suitability of persons to care for or be in regular contact with children
• Qualifications and training - common care of skills/children's workforce
• Suitability and safety of premises and equipment
• How the childcare provision is organised - behavior management
• Equal opportunities
• Procedures for dealing with complaints
• Records to be kept
• Providing information to parents - written statements of safeguarding procedures
• What you must tell Ofsted - change of address
• Public liability insurance - valid public liability insurance 
• The certificate of registration - display certificate of registration

The law allows Ofsted to carry out inspections to check that providers comply with these requirements.

All childcare providers must also comply with other relevant legislation including that covering health and safety, disability discrimination, food hygiene, fire and planning requirements.

SPARK Education provides varying levels of support programmes, to suit the individual student and their needs. We provide one-to-one tuition, either at the SPARK Centre, or at the students’ home. SPARK tutors may also travel to student’s schools for one-to-one tuition. We are flexible and able to provide the service which best suits the child, their parents and school.  Children new to the UK education system need a gradual introduction to the national curriculum. We have experience and award winning resources for this vital transition support.

 Students at the SPARK centre also have access to our computer learning programmes which follow the national curriculum and help students prepare for KS1 through to A LEVEL. We find them to be an excellent complementary tool to the one-to-one tuition. SPARK has a bank of local experienced and qualified tutors, providing one-to-one tuition to over 150 Students in the Reading area.

 We have been in contact with the one-to-one tuition co-coordinator at Reading Borough Council who has informed us that the Reading schools are charged with finding tutors for those students that qualify for this additional support. As mentioned above, SPARK has a lot of experience in this field; we have a well equipped and local education centre and a bank of qualified tutors who have:

•  Qualified teacher status
• An overseas teacher qualification, eligible to teach in schools in England
•  NQTs in the summer before they attain QTS 

• Teaching and subject specific qualifications from the HE or FE sectors.

We develop our own simple and  progressive teaching methodology  to help children to understand the subjects and learn simple easy techniques and methods to solve the complex  11+ practice papers. We are very keen about their progress and encourage them to practice a lot of varied exercises that we set for them.

Places are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis, subject to passing our initial assessment tests.  The assessment tests are held at our centre prior to registration.  We provide course material to all our students.

SPAAK Summer Out of School Activities

Are you thinking about “How to keep” the kids occupied during the summer?

SPAAK Learning Centre runs a Summer-Out of School Activities Club with the following action-packed programme n trips: Motor cross, Dolphin centre, Fashion, nails/beauty, TVU Widening participation scheme, YP Radio station – JD Jackie, Group games, Friendship bracelets, web page design, Carpentry, Introduction to Cubase/piano/saxophone, Gospel/jazz, self-awareness/development, take prize-winning photos for an exhibition, make masks, everyday basic science and a lot more.  The Holiday Club is open 10 to 2 pm every weekday, and is FREE!!

Moving from Primary to Secondary school can be very challenging and frightening for young children.  Suddenly their whole routine changes; new subjects and teachers!  At SPAAK, we know how important it is to support children at this important stage of their education to get them off to a good start.  That is why the SPAAK Centre pioneered the “Bridge the Gap” mid-summer course for children who are moving up to their `big` school.

The course runs for two weeks, to prepare children for their entry to secondary school. They will learn and chat about the differences they will find in their new school, try out their new subjects, how to look after their school diary, and manage their homework.

And besides this, they will also be able to get extra help from SPAAK HOMEWORK CLUB during the first few weeks at their new school, to help them gain confidence and settle into their new education routine.

Have you ever thought about the challenges and possible anxieties children face in the transition from primary to secondary school?  This is one of the most unsettling events in a young child’s life.  Suddenly their whole routine changes - an unfamiliar journey to a new school building, new subjects, new teachers - everything feels strange.  For many children this can be overwhelming and very frightening.  We understand these challenges at SPAAK Learning Centre and we know how important it is to support children at this important stage of their education, to get them off to a good start.

This is why SPARK has pioneered the `Bridge the Gap` mid-summer course for children who are moving up to their `big` school. The course will take place in mid August and its aim is to help prepare children for entry to secondary school.

They will learn about the differences they are likely to find in their new school and gain mutual support by chatting with other young people who are facing the same challenges.  They will also learn about the kinds of new subjects they will study, how to keep their school diary and how to manage their homework.  In addition, they will  be able to get extra help from SPAAK HOMEWORK CLUB during the first few weeks at their new school, which will help them to gain confidence and to settle into their new routine. 

Bridge-The-Gap Summer Activities week will run from 3rd to 7th August 10 am to 12 noon or 2 pm to 4 pm.  Come and join us and have some fun - and make new friends!

Birthdays are important, and SPARK EduCare Centre in the Oxford Road celebrates it’s first anniversary on the 15th of March. During this first year SPARK has made a real impact on the local community through its services to local schools, providing cover teachers and supported learning for out of school pupils, and especially with its homework club.

The location of the SPARK centre in the gatehouse of the old Battle Hospital was a conscious choice by the senior teachers to place a learning centre at the heart of the Oxford Road community, where children can enjoy learning in a calm, quiet and comfortable atmosphere. In fact it is this calm atmosphere which is the magic ingredient in encouraging children to enjoy learning.

Besides a full suite of thirty computers with state of the art learning packages, Reading parents have been particularly pleased  for the help provided by SPARKs ‘  experienced specialist subject teachers able to cover  all the main GCSE and A Levels, with one to one tuition raising those essential examination grades.

To celebrate their first birthday on the 15th of March, SPARK has planned an Open Day for parents and children, all day on Sunday the 15th of this month, followed by a whole week FREE  Homework Club, from Monday  16th to Friday 20th  During this week children will be able to drop in with their homework between 3.30 pm and  7.00 pm completely free of charge, and discover how to make learning fun once again.
