Introduction

Services at the SPARK Centre

Services at the SPAAK Centre:

1)  Standard day time tutoring services for `not at school` pupils, excluded pupils, new arrivals to the Reading area and LDD pupils - the phrase Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities refers to a wide spectrum of different needs which affect a child’s learning style. These needs can be broken down into the following three specific areas:
    i) Social, Emotional and Behavioural Disorders – such as Aspergers Syndrome and autism
ii) Sensory Impairment – such as hearing and visual impairments
iii) Learning Difficulties – such as dyslexia and Downs Syndrome
Our centre provides education for pupils aged between 5 and 19 during normal school hours (term time) who are:
a) Struggling in their mainstream placement, or
b) New to the Reading area, or
c) Out of mainstream education, for whatever reason.
We offer support to such pupils Monday to Friday from 9 am – 3 pm term time.

2)  In addition, we offer a Homework and study Club – complementing school work, and to encourage aspirations in children, each pupil has a Learning Record Sheet to record all learning activities and progress.

The Centre can also provide the following services:

  • One-to-one tuition in a calm, quiet environment helping children across the age range to catch-up in all core subjects;
  • Prepare for selection tests into grammar schools with our 11+ exam preparation course.
  • Supply Teachers, Home Tutors and Teaching Assistants to local schools and referral units.
  • Specialist staffs with skills and experience to offer consultancy services to schools which need to address OfSTED Inspection reports.
  • Literacy is of current concern - reading in Reading! help with reading and Literacy skills.
  • Social skills programme & Assessments - Extended education social projects.
  • Special support for OVERSEAS POST-GRADUATE students with writing and editing post gradraduate dissertations and theses.
  • Training for Employment to address NEETs issues as a UK Online service provider.
  • Offer Internet Access, at 50 p per hour, our Online services are the cheapest in town.
  • Volunteering opportunities for TAs and SSAs
  • ROOM Hire - Our training rooms are available to host meetings, interviews or training for  groups of 5 to 80 people at affordable prices with disable access, free car parking.

Also at our Centre in 2008, we worked with Cranbury College students on a GCSE tuition programme utilising VLE Online live lessons connected via our hardware. We are confident this will become a model for other mainstream schools and we have the resources to offer this service to Reading schools.

We run a volunteer scheme for everyone, particularly people interested in education, Overseas trained teachers, teenagers and gap year students interested in working with young people or a career in education, to help them gain vital experience.

Exclusions, Inclusions, and Student Re-integration Liaison Services

SPAAK Education Services provides complementary education services to Schools and Local Authorities. Some of our services provide advice and management of School’s Inclusions policies and procedures.

We have found recently that Schools and Local Education Authorities are experiencing increasing difficulties in managing their Inclusions procedures, and that some exclusion cases are better resolved when managed by an external agency.

SPAAK Education is able to offer an Inclusions Advice and Management service which includes; Liaison and Mediation between all parties, advising schools senior management teams, school governors, development of Pupil Reintegration programmes, and assisting in staff development programmes.

This service is provided through a dedicated Schools Inclusions Adviser, dealing with general issues relating to Schools Improvement and specific and individual cases of exclusion.
