SPAAK Social Skills Programme for LDD - Helping students achieve their potential.

We at SPAAK believe that 'every child matters' and has the potential to succeed.

What is a Social Skills Programme?

The SPAAK Social Programme aims to help students identify barriers to learning and through a personalised support programme, works with the child and the family to overcome them. We recognise that there are a range of difficulties that can impact on a child's learning, from poor handwriting and reading comprehension through to lack of confidence and behavioural difficulties which often arise as a result of frustration because they don't understand what is required and have difficulty managing their emotions.

With the opportunity for 'over learning' and a personalised academic and social skills support programme, children can regain their confidence and have a positive attitude to learning. They can practice these skills in a safe, calm yet vibrant environment and as a result, develop their self confidence and positive social skills that contribute to their personal, social and academic success.

How does the programme work?
The Programme is designed to support strategies and targets that have been set by schools and professional agencies, and being able to develop and practice new found skills in a supported and safe environment that boosts their self confidence and achievement.

The programme does not seek to psycho analyse or counsel your child but rather uses practical common sense strategies and peer support to help children model positive behaviour patterns and respond appropriately when faced with frustrating or difficult situations.

The programme can assist with:

Practical Skills

  • Handwriting
  • Keyboard Skills

Social Skills

  • Dealing with frustrating situations in the classroom
  • Making and maintaining meaningful friendships
  • Managing own behaviour
  • Assertiveness
  • Turn Taking
  • Dealing with Bullying
  • Team building
  • Problem Solving

How does the Social Skills Programme work?
We will carry out an initial consultation with parent/child to identify key strengths and areas of concern. We will ascertain 'desired outcomes' from which your Consultant will develop a personalised programme with recommended strategies, exercises and targets.

This will take account of strategies that have been tried in the past and existing targets that your child may be working towards as well as recommendations from other professionals who may be involved. We will then put together a personal plan with key targets that are conducive to delivery at SPAAK, school and home (as appropriate).

We will review progress with you at regular intervals, and issue monthly progress reports.
